Program Description

Dallas Baptist University provides a transformative educational experience for students interested in pursuing a career within the Commercial Music Industry. By developing students into servant-leaders shaped by Christian values, we believe that this coupled with a high-quality music education, performance excellence, and knowledge of the music industry will best equip students for future careers. Students will develop skills in a safe and positive learning environment with rigorous instruction and one-on-one mentorship designed to ensure students achieve mastery so that they have the skills, character, business acumen, and confidence to be leading industry professionals within the ever-changing landscape of the music industry.

* Music Proficiency Exam Level II courses (course, course, and course) are requisites for course all upper-level music courses, and all Commercial Music career emphasis courses.

Complete a total of 12 credits of applied lessons involving the primary instrument, a secondary instrument, and studio commercial music. Lessons must take place every semester, beginning at the 1000-level with two semesters of each level.

Complete at least six (6) credit hours of applied lessons in primary instrument.

Piano --2- (If piano is the primary instrument, secondary piano requirements must be fulfilled as part of the six (6) credit primary instrument credits of piano, so the secondary requirements are completed with a different instrument.)

Other instrumental lessons may be available depending on demand.

OR

Complete at least ten (10) credit hours of applied lessons in primary instrument. The first two semesters, students take 1 credit hour courses per semester; the following four semesters, students take 2 credit hour courses per semester.

Piano --2- (If piano is the primary instrument, secondary piano requirements must be fulfilled as part of the six (6) credit primary instrument credits of piano, so the secondary requirements are completed with a different instrument.)

Other instrumental lessons may be available depending on demand.

Complete four (4) credit hours as a secondary instrument. If piano is not the primary instrument, then three (3) credits hours of Applied Piano are required as partial fulfillment of this secondary requirement.

Commercial Performance students take an additional four credits of Applied Instruction, which is listed in the Applied Primary Instrument Lessons section above. This is broken down into two semesters of 1-credit hour Applied courses, followed by four semesters of 2-credit hour lessons in primary instrument, totaling 4 additional primary instrument credits.

A 120-credit-hour minimum for a bachelor’s degree is required, including 36 upper-level credit hours.

Minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA required in the major field (business, music, music business), with a letter grade of “C-“ or better in each course.

At least 12 credit hours in the major program must be completed at Dallas Baptist University, including nine upper-level course hours.

Minimum GPA Required for Graduation from Dallas Baptist University: DBU requires a minimum institutional cumulative, major, and minor GPA of 2.0.

A minimum grade of C- is required for all music courses within a music major or minor field of study.
